Amy Leonard, Lic. Ac.

I started my journey with acupuncture when my daughter was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety and Panic Disorder at age 9. I had concerns about medicating her at such a young age, wondering what it would do to her growth and development, not only physically but primarily emotionally. I worried that, if medicated, she wouldn’t find a way to understand her anxiety nor learn tools to help manage it. We tried a few different approaches but everything seemed to exasperate her anxiety rather than make it better.  A friend recommended acupuncture. She knew an acupuncturist who traveled to a pediatric clinic once a month to give kids treatments for anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, etc. I thought, acupuncture, sure why not!

Acupuncture literally changed my daughter’s life (and mine!). Regular acupuncture treatments coupled with changes in her diet, monitored by a Naturopathic Doctor, transformed my daughter from a frightened, terrified, sleepless little girl to happy, joyful, rested and relaxed young lady. She learned tools and techniques to help manage anxiety pop ups at home but perhaps most importantly she learned what triggered the anxiety and panic, how it felt in her body and how to slowly walk her way back to a state of relaxation and calmness.

Those lessons would prove invaluable for both us. For my daughter as she grew, matured, went away to college, completed college, traveled the world and is now adulting her own way through life as an entrepreneur. For me, as I faced a whole decade of new physical challenges and a level of pain, I never knew was possible. What I learned from my daughter was that its OK to feel…to understand what’s going on in your body.  Don’t fear it. Instead, embrace it, visit with it, dissect it, make a connection to it and then … slowly, walk your way back to a state of relaxation and calmness and then forward into wellness. This is the principle I have embraced in my body, my life, in my interactions with others and in my practice.

Acupuncture had played such an integral role in helping my daughter and I find our way back to wellness that I thought, “this is it; this is what I want to do”. I went back to school, full time, at the age of 45, and received my Master of Acupuncture Degree. I can not use enough words to describe how I feel about the endless wonders and healing properties of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. Make no mistake, Acupuncture is medicine, just not in the form we are used to seeing in Western culture. I would love the opportunity to explore the challenges you face in your life. Let’s take a look at them, dissect them, understand them and then together, let’s find a way to slowly walk into a new journey of healing and wellness together.
